Educational Attainment

  • Educational attainment refers to the highest level of education completed by an individual
  • In today’s economy, a high school diploma is considered a basic requirement
  • While the percentage of Jamestown and Chautauqua County residents who graduate from high school closely mirrors state and Federal percentages,  a significantly lower percentage of the local population has a Bachelor’s degree or higher than the rest of the state and the country as a whole
  • This may be an indicator of the outmigration of educated, young people from the county
  • While there have been a number of initiatives to encourage young professionals to return to Jamestown to live and work, especially those in the medical field, the statistics seem to indicate that the county suffers from a “brain drain”

  • Unfortunately, there are no statistics to indicate how many of these scholarship recipients return to the area
