Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. The Spina Bifida Association of America promotes the prevention of Spina Bifida and works to enhance the lives of all affected. Breastfeeding & NutritionLearn about the benefits to moms, children and the environment of breastfeeding as well as 10 facts about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding Library & COI Breast Pump Rental Stations Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. maintains a breastfeeding library. Materials cover a wide range of subjects in both English and Spanish. There are even children's books explaining breastfeeding for brothers and sisters of newborns. Books are loaned free of charge. Breast pumps are available to the public as well as WIC moms. Pumps and accessories are available to rent or purchase. Instruction is provided on set-up and use of the pumps. Prices vary depending on the type of pump. Connections North Laughlin Community Action Center Jamestown, NY 14701 Breastfeeding Consultation Chautauqua Opportunities provides breastfeeding consultations to expecting moms. COI conducts hospital visits at Brooks Memorial Hospital and Westfield Memorial Hospital. WCA Hospital has its own breastfeeding consultant in-house. Breastfeeding consultations and classes are also offered in both the Jamestown and Dunkirk offices listed above on an appointment basis. The fee is based on the Mother's ability to pay (sliding scale). Breastfeeding Counseling for new mothers WCA Hospital Peer Counselor Program Moms that have breastfed and who have received Chautauqua Opportunities training are available to support and assist new mothers in the WIC program. In the last trimester of pregnancy, moms can sign up for a peer counselor by giving their name and telephone number to the COI Peer Counselor Coordinator. The assigned peer counselor will contact the mom, get acquainted and follow-up with breastfeeding support calls or meetings at COI offices after the baby is born.
