Every year, United Way presents the Joseph H. Mason Award to a union member or staff person whose volunteer service to the community honors the spirt of involvement exhibited by late Joseph H. Mason.
Last year, Loren Smith, member of the NYSUT, Panama Faculty Association, was recognized as the 2017 Joseph H. Mason Award winners.
He is the President of Panama Central School's Local Union and is employed as a faculty member there as well.
Loren represents what Joe Mason stood for – commitment to community while serving his Union membership tirelessly. Loren serves as a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon Coordinator, Southern Tier Basketball Camps Director, Regional NYS Teacher Retirement System Delegate, Section 6 Boys Basketball Committee-At-Large Member, Chautauqua County Exceptional Senior Basketball Games Director, Panama Modified Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Coach, and Panama X-Country Coach. He has also been involved in other groups, and he just goes above and beyond to help. His service doesn’t go unnoticed and is admired by others.
